Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) on Monday announced he would attempt to block the D.C. Death with Dignity Act passed by the District’s City Council and signed by Mayor Bowser.
Chaffetz’s sole reason: he “fundamentally disagrees with the bill.”
Yes, you read that right: Based on his personal disagreement with the Act, Chaffetz, a Utahn, is attempting to block all D.C. residents from having this right.
We must stop this attack on the District residents’ rights! This is a vetted, debated, and carefully considered bill that 67 percent of residents support. The Utah Representative should let the District decide for itself.
Can you chip in to help us to stop Representative Chaffetz from interfering with D.C.’s Death with Dignity legislation?
As we have been from Day 1, we are one hundred percent with the Act’s sponsor, Councilmember Mary Cheh, when she said that the Act is “entirely a local matter.”
[W]hile the Congressman “may have philosophical or perhaps even religious objections…we [the D.C. residents] have made our own choice and it should be respected.”
And we stand with D.C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes-Norton, who plans to mount a “vigorous defense of the District’s local legislation.” Since voters or legislators in five states have now approved Oregon-style Death with Dignity statutes, “there is no justification for Congress abusing its authority over the District by singling the District out for different treatment.”
You may remember Rep. Chaffetz as the Congressman who spent years and millions of tax dollars conducting an investigation into Benghazi that concluded that…there was no wrongdoing. With such a history of misguided and wasteful action, shouldn’t the Congressman stay focused on issues that impact his constituents?
Help us stop Representative Chaffetz and his Congressional ilk from defying the will of the people in our nation’s capital. Chip in $25 to help us stop them.
Thank you for all you do to ensure all Americans can die with dignity.
