History is about to be made in Hawai‘i.
The Hawai‘i State Senate today voted to pass a death with dignity bill. The 23 to 2 vote in favor of HB2739 HD1, Our Care Our Choice Act, reaffirms the Hawai‘i Senators’ vote last year on a similar bill.
Already approved by the Hawai‘i State House earlier this month, the bill now heads to Governor Ige who has expressed support and said he would be proud and honored to sign it. We are one signature away from Hawai‘i becoming the nation’s seventh jurisdiction with a death with dignity statute. Soon the residents of Hawai‘i will have the same peaceful end-of-life option that those of California, Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and Washington, D.C. do.
All of us at the Death with Dignity National Center are grateful to the members of the legislature who recognized that the will of voters could no longer be ignored. Please join us and sign our thank you e-card to the Hawai‘i State Senators who voted for the death with dignity bill:
For nearly two decades we have worked with citizens, legislators, and leaders to bring the right to die with dignity to the people of Hawai‘i. From former Governor Ben Cayetano to hundreds of citizens who have faithfully worked for this cause, today marks a new beginning in Hawai‘i’s treatment of the terminally ill.
As we await Governor Ige’s signature on this legislation, we cannot help but feel comfort knowing that the laws in other states, particularly Oregon where it has been in effect for more than 20 years, have proven flawless in their implementation, protecting the rights of patients, family members, and health care professionals as they work through this process.
Please sign the thank you e-card to all Hawai‘i Senators who voted for this bill.
As the number of states with death with dignity statutes continues to grow, we are more inspired than ever to keep working until death with dignity is a right available to all qualified terminally ill Americans.
Thank you for your continued support.

The dying have so much to teach humanity about dignity, compassion, and acceptance as they embrace each stage and step of dying. I’m sorry those who choose to die before their time do not see their own value in the suffering process. I’m thankful Christ didn’t do this so heaven would open up for all sinners.
