Afterword: Physician-Assisted Dying Concepts

In the Fight for Physician-Assisted Death, Words Matter

The words we choose affect our success. In a look at our country’s struggle to legalize death with dignity in 2015, Mother Jones indicated the use of the word “suicide” as part of the phrase, “assisted suicide,” not only fails to resonate with people dying from terminal illnesses they did not choose. It also has mobilized and activated religious groups with prescriptions against suicide in their faith to challenge laws and ballot measures across the country. This was seen most recently in Hawaii, where legislation fell short of passage in 2017 despite strong public support, in part because of motivated lobbying from religious groups. As we continue to advocate for greater patient control, we must consider the words we use as well as the values we promote.
