Afterword: Physician-Hastened Dying Concepts

Despite Strong Public Support, Medical Aid in Dying Stymied in Hawaii

In late March, a Hawaii State House committee deferred a physician-assisted dying bill which had passed the Senate with a strong majority. In July, First Circuit Court of Hawaii Judge Keith Hiraoka dismissed a lawsuit making the case that the state’s murder and manslaughter laws don’t apply to physicians. The judge referenced the thousands of pages of testimony received in response to the bill, saying the issue should be addressed in the legislature, not the courts. With recent polls showing up to 80 percent support, it is likely the issue will be taken up again next year in the legislature.
