Afterword: Physician-Assisted Dying Concepts

Death with Dignity Continues to Draw Support, Legislation

Brittany Maynard’s public struggle with terminal brain cancer in 2014 was a turning point for the Death with Dignity movement, sometimes referred to by critics as “physician-assisted suicide.” Brittany spoke out in favor of aid in dying laws on social media platforms like YouTube, with a highly publicized move to Oregon to make use of Oregon’s Death with Dignity law. Her case resulted in a significant increase in awareness of and support for physician-assisted dying. That interest continues to ripple through politics, with up to two dozen states considering bills every session since then. The Death with Dignity Political Fund provides support and technical assistance to advocates and elected officials to craft laws based on the Oregon model.
