April 24, 2017

In the week from April 17 to April 23, 2017:

  • The Joint Standing Committee on Health and Human Services of the Maine State Legislature held a work session on LD 347/LD 1066, a pair of medical aid in dying bills, voting 5 to 8 against, with a divided report and recommendation “Ought Not to Pass.”
  • Meanwhile, the Kennebec Journal/Portland Press Herald endorsed the two bills, and Maine Governor Paul LePage came out strongly against them, vowing to veto any such legislation.

Afterword: Physician-Assisted Dying Concepts

Prognosis Is Good for Aid in Dying Movement

Some people have had concerns this year that a change on the US Supreme Court bench might be a step backward for the Death with Dignity movement, because of Neil Gorsuch’s past writings on the subject. However, there is low likelihood that the Supreme Court will hear any related case in the near future, having made two rulings on the issue in the past. Moreover, public support for aid in dying continues to be strong in many parts of the country, including several states where bills are currently being considered. While it can take years to gain the political support to get a bill through a state legislature, the consistent public support bodes well for a strong and growing movement to support physician-assisted death.
