In the two weeks from May 2 to May 15, 2016:

  • A New York state appellate court upheld a lower-court ruling that state residents have a right to refuse medical treatment but physicians do not have the right to help them die.
  • The two bills pending in the New York state legislature were combined and introduced as a single bill.
  • In California, debate intensified in the run-up to the implementation of the End of Life Option Act on June 9.

Advocate for Physician-Assisted Death in Your State

There is a growing availability of physician-assisted dying in the United States, with 70 percent of Americans in a recent survey declaring support. However, many advocates and lawmakers have in recent years attempted to pass aid in dying bills only to have those efforts die on the vine (or in legislative committee). The Death with Dignity National Center is working with those advocates to build strategic support for legislation in order to get it passed.
