Afterword: Physician-Assisted Dying Concepts
Once Known as “Physician-Assisted Suicide,” Aid in Dying Movement Moves into Mainstream
It could be the highly-publicized case of Brittany Maynard who relocated to Oregon after a terminal brain cancer diagnosis so she could take advantage of the state’s Death with Dignity law. Or it could be the Baby Boomer generation’s growing concerns with end-of-life care as they have watched their own parents, and often also friends, face challenging and painful terminal illness. Whatever the reasons, more and more people are open to the idea that a terminal patient should be able to choose the time of their death. With this growing acceptance comes an evolution in language: what was once referred to as “physician-assisted suicide” now has more value-neutral terminology like “aid in dying.”
