Afterword: Physician-Assisted Dying Concepts

New Study Shows Support across Ethnicities for Medical Aid in Dying

Until California’s watershed aid in dying bill became law, similar laws had only taken effect in states that were largely majority white. Within those states, predominantly white, well-educated people have made use of the provisions in stronger numbers than state demographics would suggest, leading some to wonder whether openness to the idea of Death with Dignity was linked with race and ethnicity. A new study of attitudes about medical aid in dying in California and Hawaii, however, shows strong support across ethnic groups for physician-assisted death. While religious/spiritual views and age influenced attitudes about aid in dying, ethnicity and gender did not play a role.
