Looking Back at Oregon’s Death with Dignity Law, 18 Years Later

As we approach the 19th year of implementation, Death with Dignity Oregon offers a wealth of information about how this landmark aid in dying bill has been implemented and used. Luckily for the people of Oregon, the data do not indicate that a Death with Dignity Act pros and cons list would be useful, because few if any of the detractors’ concerns regarding the bill have come to pass. There is no evidence that anyone using the law was influenced or coerced into doing so. The law did not lead the medical community down the “slippery slope” toward full-blown euthanasia of the mentally ill or sick people from disenfranchised communities. The law’s implementation has been a success.
